My birthday is on the 6th of Jan - every year. People have no money. If money is not the problem, they are either on holiday or they have plans at the end of Jan (to save their long lost salaries).
This year I decided to have a humdinger of a get together, for the fun of it. After tragically losing two young friends last year, I want to be around those still with me, to just share time with them and start the year off with a bang. Life is short, I'm not taking it for granted!
So I accidentally invited "a couple peeps" that I thought would like to share a drink with me for a couple of hours. 120 invites out later and I'm sitting with 65 confirmed guests - and I'm not flinching.
Laugh it up
Now personally, although it was an initial oversight on my part, I like the idea of celebrating. There's something about throwing a party that is necessary for my personal 'Chi'. Laughter makes me happy, who needs a reason to party?
Unaplogetically Me
I was, however, temporarily disheartened when one of my invited guests asked me why on earth I would have invited so many people to this event. Wanting to know a reason behind my apparent insanity, I couldn't do much else but laugh at this silly question. Since when do we need a reason to celebrate life?
Maybe it's the Viking blood in me that still flows from generations of Scandinavian heritage, perhaps the need to feast and drink is strong with me. Be that as it may, I considered my best response, which was literally "LOL" and shrugged it off.
Break the Mould
We live lives of mundane routine and structure. Our personal highlights are often created in the moments of unforeseen opportunities and spontaneous silliness, but only if we're able to see the 'glass half full'.
There are those who have declined my invitation to my belated celebration and those who have accepted and responded whole-heartedly with the same enthusiasm I feel about the idea.
Truth is, you're going to get those who see life as a chore, structured with pillars of conditions and restrictions. And then there are those who create their own joy and share with those willing to embrace life. There's nothing sexier, more appealing and inspiring than those who find a reason to celebrate for no 'apparent' or 'expected' reason. Which one are you?
Worst case scenario you land up taking more chances and smiling a whole lot more than you did before. So next time you're pouring your milk into your cereal, grab some chocolate powder and stir things up. Break dance in the traffic, buy balloons and tie them to your bosses chair, or just simply say yes more often to those invites.
Find reasons to celebrate, you are surrounded by opportunities to turn the obvious into exceptional.
Beautifully written!! Happiness is such a choice!
